Dr. Margaret Preston
Dr. Preston began her career as a model and make-up artist. She graduated from Robert Fiance´ School of Beauty in New York City. She studied under the direction of Danton Thompson of Christine Valmy, New York. She traveled as a make-up artist for several cosmetic companies, including Cardeaux cosmetics in Atlanta, Georgia. She received the “Outstanding Achievement Award” while employed by Estee´ Lauder.

While working as a make-up artist the connection between enhanced appearance and improved self-esteem became apparent to her. Although this enhanced appearance improved self-esteem, it was only temporary. Margaret realized that women struggled with issues that went further than she could address at that time. This prompted Margaret to begin her early studies in psychology. The quest for knowledge continued. While completing a practicum at a psychiatric hospital Margaret began to question whether adding a cosmetic and grooming behaviors workshop to the psychiatric setting could make a difference in one’s perception of self, alleviating symptoms associated with psychological problems. She conducted her masters theses hypothesizing that “Self-esteem would be greater in a group of depressed patients who received a “cosmetic holistic approach” to treatment compared to a group receiving traditional intervention. This “cosmetic holistic approach” encourages the therapist and the client to look at the “whole” person. The results were significant.
Dr. Preston coined the term “cosmetic holistic approach” which encourages the client and therapist to look at the “whole” person.

“Often, it is not enough to address internal psychological issues without addressing the external self.” According to Dr. Preston, through proper assessment and intervention the client can learn to make both internal and external changes, improving their overall sense of self and their relationship with others while eliminating symptoms associated with depression, anxiety, and other psychological issues.
Dr. Preston received her Masters degree in Social Work from Marywood College.
She received her Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania.
